Tree vs Rock

The eternal struggle between rocks and their mortal enemies, plants, continues in the battleground of Providence Canyon, GA.

Why is the rock two different colors on either side of the tree?

I think that's stratigraphic; the cretaceous sandstones in these parts are either tan-yellow or that weird purple.

Alternatively, the tree is really really really squeezing the hell out of that rock, and it is out of breath.
